Welcome to our Events Gallery page. We are sharing some photos from this year’s GOHS events—and last year, as well. We have a lot of fun together and hope you will join us. See our schedule of events for this year on the ‘Calendar’ tab.

Speaking of events, we have a lot of requests to use our beautiful Hosta Garden for special events. The stone grotto waterfall is a favorite stage for weddings and family photography. Your special event can be reserved by calling the Springfield Botanical Center at 417-891-1515.

It was certainly a warm summer day, but nice and cool inside at the botanical center. The Hosta Bouquet Workshop was great! It is always a pleasure to have Angela Keith with us. She is so creative and shares many great ideas and tips to create our own floral masterpieces. She also brought along additional flowers and greenery to go along with the flowers and hosta leaves we brought from home. JJ brought some great sweet treats to enjoy while we made our flower arrangements. Fun time!

Meet June Huff! When you walk through her gate you are probably going to say ‘Wow!’ The garden not only has been planted to attract pollinators, but also designed as a beautiful space to spend outdoors. I loved all the garden decor, and behind a really cool stained glass door that June found is a little secret garden.

AUTUMN WILLIS & ERIKA PETREY GARDEN TOUR!

Autumn & Ryan Willis, and Erika Petrey purchased the one acre property a few years ago, and have created unique natural areas that incorporate a variety of plants species. There are designated areas that include pollinator habitats, wild native areas, and a shaded stroll garden. A bubbling water feature has been added that attracts birds, bees and butterflies. The property has a total of 660 gallons of rainwater catchment. The love of birds, pollinators, and native plants is evident thoughout the property.

MICHAEL FESSENDEN GARDEN TOUR!

Michael Fessenden’s garden is in Ozark, MO. I think my first words were, “Oh, wow!” Michael used huge rocks and a lot of flat rocks to create this magnificent garden and pathways, and filled it with colorful flowering shrubs and plants throughout. Michael owns Myron Royce Nursery and Landscaping, and this garden is a beautiful example of his creativity.

TIM BREAUX GARDEN TOUR!

Located in Ozark, MO, Tim’s garden is filled with beautiful container plantings and hydrangeas in bloom, and lots of other carefully selected plants. Strolling to the back yard, you are greeted by the most perfect place to spend a summer afternoon. There is comfortable seating, a breeze is blowing, a magnificent view of the open countryside, and a large beautifully built Koi pond. Check out all the beautiful rocks, water plants, and Koi fish.

JJ AVERETT GARDEN TOUR!

JJ has a stunning shade garden filled with hundreds of hosta plants, Japanese Maple trees, ferns, and other shade plants. She created a dry creek with a couple of bridges, and other garden decor, as well as many beautiful container plantings.

I have visited JJ’s garden before and it is always amazing. There is something new each time I’ve seen it, and she cares for it all by herself.

Sue Fuller started her garden in Springfield ten years ago. It was a blank slate at the time, and she has created a very elegant garden masterpiece. There is a covered patio area perfect for entertaining, or just to sit and enjoy the garden.

This was a sunny day and I didn’t get great photos, but I really enjoyed Edith’s garden in Springfield. Like me, she has a smaller space to garden in, and she has done it very well. She created a curved walkway to enjoy her beautiful flower beds, and they were magnificent! I also enjoyed her container plantings, and perfectly placed bird baths, statuary, and other great garden finds.

RICK & LINDA JENSEN’S GARDEN TOUR!

Sunday, May 17th. The first garden tour of the year was at the home of Rick and Linda Jensen. Rick and Linda live on a gorgeous property near Hartville, MO. They have created a beautiful trailed garden as well as special landscaping around the house and trees for their enjoyment. They use many of the large rocks on their property creatively in the garden and other areas. Rick also made some of the metal silhouettes and several Japanese shrines. After strolling through the garden, we enjoyed gathering for root beer floats, ice cream, and cookies. A great time! Thank you, Rick and Linda!

PLANTING DAY IN THE HOSTA & FOUNDERS GARDENS!

Friday, May 8th was our annual GOHS planting day in the Hosta and Founders Gardens. Our new concrete pots had already arrived and placed at the east entrance to the Hosta Garden. They are quite large, and just beautiful! They were planted with Hosta ‘Kossa Regal’ and Hosta ‘Mauri Gold.’ In addition, we planted several hundred caladium bulbs, as well as more coleus and hosta plants. We thinned out the Solomon Seal and Sensitive Ferns. In the Founders Garden we planted 40 begonias.

Special thanks for all those that came to help. The gardens are beautiful, and we have such great volunteers to thank for that: Autumn Willis, Barb Brown, Cynthia Roderique, Deanna Armstrong, Donna Fritz, Kristie Polk, Mary Rudolph, Minuen Odom, Pat Monday, Roberta Stewart, Terry Thayer, and Tony Ahart. Thanks to JJ Averett for organizing our work days and calendar events, ordering the plants, providing refreshments, and a hundred other things she does. Also, special thanks to Deanna Armstrong for the beautiful photos she shared with us.

HOSTA & FOUNDERS GARDENS SPRING CLEAN-UP!

Friday, March 13th, was our first work day of the year in the Hosta and Founders Gardens. Both gardens needed to be raked, weeded, and brush cleaned up. The remaining hosta stems were removed, fertilizer and slug/snail bait applied, and 25 yards of compost was laid down in the Hosta Garden.There was a lot to do, but we had an amazing group show up to make it happen! A HUGE ‘Thank You’ to JJ Averett, Pat Monday, Roberta Stewart, Tony Ahart, Autumn Willis, Kenna Wiggins, Pat Swackhamer, Barb Brown, Terry Thayer, Cynthia Roderique, Minuen Odom, Dana Bruns, Mary Rudolph, Robert Childress, Isaac Lair, and Tom Lakowske.

GOHS GAME DAY!

It was sunny (and cold) when we got together for our first event of the year, making it a great time to do something fun inside. Rummikub turned out to be the game of choice. Autumn & Erika brought a ‘Bird Bingo’ game that was really fun. It is played the same as the traditional game, except it uses 64 images of favorite species and exotic birds to match instead of numbers. We had great food to snack on, too!

CHRISTMAS PARTY & COOKIE EXCHANGE

This was a ‘Yummy’ Christmas Party! We had a cookie exchange! Everyone that participated, brought one or two dozen of their favorite holiday cookies. Plenty of extras were brought to share and enjoy at the party, and those that brought cookies went home with some great cookies for the holidays. There were fun games and a good time was had by all.

HALLOWEEN PARTY & GAME DAY

A few photos to share from our GOHS October get together. It was a fun afternoon with some very creative Halloween costumes, good food, and table games. Some of the most creative costumes were: Charlie and Roberta Stewart came dressed as ‘Carrots and Peas’ — Dana Bruns was ‘50 Shades of Gray’ — Barb Brown and Debbie Collins were ‘Happy Jack O’ Lanterns’ — Deanna Haworth came as a ‘Green Lacewing Fairy’ — there was ‘Groovy’ Deanna Armstrong — Cathy Lakowske was ‘Lady Catherine’ — and Tom Lakowske came as the ‘Absent-Minded Professor.’ Be sure and check out the photos below. There were prizes for the best costume, funniest costume, and most creative Halloween snack. Whether it is garden work days, or fun events like this—it is always good times with the Greater Ozarks Hosta Society!

Once again, we were honored to have our featured speaker, Oscar Cross, join us and share his expertise on hostas. Joining Oscar this year was Heather Kite, owner of Rooted Deep Farms. Heather brought us up to date on Rooted Deep Farms along with with some of the hostas she has for our fall planting, and what she will have next season. A very enjoyable afternoon with friends, hosta talk, great desserts and ice cream!

TERRARIUM DEMONSTRATION & WORKSHOP

Janet did a fantastic presentation demonstrating the construction of a terrarium. She brought a few of her own to display using different containers, which were very inspiring. Then we all got to make our own terrarium with glass containers, plants, etc. we brought from home.

PAPERCRETE WORKSHOP

What a fun and very educational event! Meet Lee Coates, the Papercrete Potter! Some lucky attendees were selected for a hands-on experience in making their own Papercrete planters, as Lee instructed the process. Lee and Peggy are masters at making these amazing planters, and miniature gardens to go in them. They also had a table set up of some of their work for sale.

This was such a fun event! Angela Keith did a great workshop on how to use our hosta leaves in floral arrangements. She shared lots of very interesting tips on how to use them in different ways. We were to bring some hosta leaves from our own garden, some flowers (if we had them), and a vase. Angela also brought flowers and greenery we could use.

GARDEN TOUR – MARGERY WEST

It was so enjoyable to visit with Margery and tour her garden. She said her yard was a blank slate when she bought the home in 2021. She has large containers and raised beds for growing her vegetables, and beds of beautiful flowers in bloom. It was quite impressive with all she has done in such a short time.

This is the little cottage home of Deanna Haworth. Everything in front is so beautiful and well tended, but there is a secret . . . when you step into the back yard, it is magical! There are fairies and gnomes living amongst all the beautiful hostas and shade loving plants. What an amazing garden!

HOSTA & FOUNDERS GARDENS PLANTING DAY

We had a great turnout to get the gardens cleaned up of limbs and weeds, and planted with the yearly annuals.

HOSTA GARDEN: After the beds got a good cleaning, the planting began! Myron Royce Nursery donated 6 flats of begonias, impatiens and coleus. We also added 300 caladium bulbs and a few ‘Captain Kirk’ hostas.

FOUNDERS GARDEN: The Founders Garden was cleaned of fallen limbs, weeded, and planted with 6 dozen beautiful begonias.

Meet Chuck Bruton! Chuck was our guest speaker at the GOHS April meeting. He shared some really good tips and tricks on how to use our cell phones and cameras to get the best photographs. I am a little embarrassed at the quality of photos I took during the meeting, but will share a few that I took after hearing his photo tips. They turned out pretty good!

GOHS HOSTA & FOUNDERS GARDENS CLEAN-UP & LUNCH

It was a chilly day for the gardens early spring cleanup this year, but a great group showed up to get it done, and we finished in good time. All the beds were raked and cleaned of any weeds, downed limbs picked up, fertilizer and slug bait applied, and pathways cleaned. We had a great lunch afterward. The gardens are now ready for those amazing hostas, and their companion plants!

It was Super Bowl Sunday, but at the Library Center it was SUPER GAME SUNDAY with the GOHS! There were several games to choose from, along with hot chocolate and lots of snacks to enjoy. It was a fun afternoon, plus we all got home in time to watch the Super Bowl!
