2026 GOHS Events Calendar

We are looking forward to all the events planned this year, and hope you can join us. We won’t be ‘snail mailing’ the calendar, so be sure to print it out, or you can always access it here on our website.

GOHS GAME DAY
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Springfield Botanical Center

Our game days are still popular! You’re invited to bring a favorite game to play, as well as your favorite game snack. Come join us for a fun time!

HOSTA & FOUNDERS GARDENS SPRING CLEAN-UP
FRIDAY, MARCH 13, 9:00 a.m. – finished

We will be cleaning beds in both gardens. In the Hosta garden, we will be applying compost, then adding fertilizer and snail bait. Pizza, treats, and water will be available at noon for lunch.

PLANTING DAY IN THE HOSTA & FOUNDERS GARDENS
FRIDAY, MAY 8, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

We will be gathering for this event to plant annuals, as well as approximately 300 caladium bulbs, and 3 varieties of hostas.

GARDEN TOUR
SUNDAY, MAY 17, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Rick & Linda Jensen have a beautiful setting near Hartville, MO. We will take a country drive to visit this unique wooded garden where they have used their own native rock, and other resources to create this wonderful space. Rick and Linda will also be serving ice cream, root beer floats, and cookies.

GARDEN TOURS
SUNDAY, JUNE 14, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Edith Wallace, 506 W. Ildereen St. Sprngfield, 65807. Edith’s flowers are bursting with color right now. You will enjoy seeing all of her varieties and the creative way she grows them. You may have to look under bushes for her shade loving plants since her garden is mostly sun.

Priya Lovett, 2850 S. Versailles Ave. Springfield, 65804. Priya has a unique shade garden with many sizes of beautiful conifer trees among large boulders and rock walkway. You will also enjoy the water features and relaxing atmosphere of her garden.

Sue Fuller, 4448 S. English Ivy Ave., Springfield, 65804. If you like to entertain you will get some great ideas when you see Sue’s back yard. Sue started her garden 10 years ago as a blank slate and has created a formal private yard that you will envy, from her arbor to colorful pots, trees, shrubs and much more.

EVENING IN THE GARDEN — Canceled due to weather
SUNDAY, JUNE 21, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

J.J. Averett will host a pot-luck meal with the Hosta Society furnishing the meat. Please bring your favorite side dish or dessert, as well as a lawn chair. You’re invited to stroll through the shaded garden that features a few hundred hostas, Japanese Maple trees, varieties of ferns, a dry creek with 2 bridges, and much, much more. The garden changes yearly with all the potted plants, elephant ears, and coleus.

GARDEN TOURS
SUNDAY, JUNE 28, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Tim Breaux has built a relatively new large Koi pond with a variety of plants including many water lilies and large rocks. The Koi pond is located close to a large covered patio for enjoyment. Beyond the pond is a landscaped view of the countryside, as well as Tim’s art studio.

Michael Fessenden’s place features mature oat trees, a small creek, waterfall, pond, and a boulder retaining wall. Stone and brick patios, including an outdoor fire pit, provide a great area for entertaining. Well placed Japanese Maple trees, conifers, perennials and annuals add to this wonderful setting. Michael also knows how to cope with the deer.

GARDEN TOURS
SUNDAY, JULY 19, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

June Huff has a former Koi pond that has been converted to a pollinator garden with a tiered water feature. The back yard also features banana trees, hostas, Lenten rose, coral bells, and caladiums that add color and texture throughout the garden. Recently planted lilies and phlox, as well as native plants, enhance the garden’s biodiversity.

Autumn Willis & Erika Petrey strive for a ‘chaos cottage garden’ on their one acre mature forest property. Their emphasis is on natives. Some of the designated areas include a butterfly station, pollinator habitats, and a wildlife area. They also have a bubbling water feature to attract bees and butterflies. The property has a 700-gallon water catchment system.

HOSTA BOUQUET WORKSHOP
SUNDAY, JULY 26, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Springfield Botanical Center

By popular demand, Angela Keith will again demonstrate how to create beautiful bouquets. For this workshop, please bring a variety of hosta leaves and flowers from your garden in a vase of water. You will also need a vase (for your bouquet), and scissors. Angela will provide some of the supplies, as well as some flowers and greenery. You will go home with a beautiful bouquet from your own garden.

SPEAKER & WATERMELON SOCIAL
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Springfield Botanical Center

Danny Lawson, Journal Editor with the American Hosta Society will show us over 35 display gardens from around the United States. Danny will also talk to us about how information from the American Hosta Society can help us with our own gardens. Bring some watermelon or a favorite treat to share and enjoy while watching the presentation.

GAME DAY & HALLOWEEN PARTY
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Springfield Botanical Center

You are invited to bring your favorite game. Rumikub is popular but several different board games are usually available to choose from. Wearing a costume is optional, but really fun if you do. There will be prizes for favorite costumes and most creative Halloween treat. You are welcome to bring your favorite game ‘treat’ or a Halloween themed treat. Beverages will be available.

CHRISTMAS PARTY
SUNDAY DECEMBER 6, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Springfield Botanical Center

The cookie exchange was so popular last year, we were asked to do it again. To participate, bring 12 – 24 of your favorite holiday cookies. You will take home the same amount you brought. It is fun to sample and enjoy some cookies during the party, so you are welcome to bring some extras. Refreshments will be available. Santa says ‘no presents’ this year, but some games are a possibility—dressing festively is always encouraged.

LET’S KEEP THE GARDENS PRISTINE AGAIN IN 2026

To have beautiful gardens, it takes constant care. Your help is appreciated so much. It’s a great time to get to know other gardeners, learn how to care for the plants, as well as getting knowledge for your own garden. It is not a huge job when many participate, so please join us. It is a great time to meet others, share knowledge, and ask questions. And we always have fun!

We meet in the Hosta garden about every 2 weeks at 9:00 a.m. — usually on Friday, but some Thursdays. Please mark your calendar for these dates:

April: 4/17, 4/30 (Thurs.)

May: 5/15, 5/29

June: 6/12, 6/26

July: 7/10, 7/24

August: 8/06 (Thurs.), 8/21

September: 9/03 (Thurs.), 9/18

*Final fall clean-up is done once the plants are through for the season due to frost/freezes.
