HOSTA & FOUNDERS GARDENS CLEAN-UP & LUNCH
 FRIDAY MARCH 1, 10:00 a.m. – finished

Bring your rakes and blowers as we’ll be cleaning the beds and paths, applying fertilizer and slug bait. No compost this year. Lunch and water will be provided by GOHS.

GARDEN TOURS & POT LUCK
SATURDAY MAY 4, 12:00 – 3:00 p.m.
(Rain Date Sunday May 5)

Tom & Cathy Lakowske have many Japanese Maple Trees that will be in their glory. Their shade garden has “rooms” where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful hostas (many are potted), clematis, a variety of additional shade plants and so much more. Tom & Cathy are hosting the Pot Luck. GOHS will furnish the meat and members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert. Once you’ve enjoyed the garden and Pot Luck you will venture to the next garden at 2:00.
Renee Gross has a variety of regular peonies as well as tree peonies that will be blooming. Renee has the advantage of a sun/shade garden so she has many plants and shrubs in her beautifully manicured yard. You’ll enjoy seeing the relaxing environment she has created.

RESCHEDULED:  HOSTA & FOUNDERS GARDENS PLANTING DAY
SATURDAY, MAY 18, 9:00 a.m. – finished

Originally scheduled for Friday, May 17, we’ve moved our planting day because of rainy weather. The Hosta Garden was weeded again this week so is in good shape, but the cut worms have been active around some of the hostas so we will need to treat them. It is now warm enough to plant our 300 caladium bulbs and annuals.  Several flats of beautiful coleus were purchased this week, and we have white impatiens to plant in the new bed by our new pond. We will be putting the caladiums in the wheelbarrow to distribute into 1 gallon ice cream pails or something similar, so please bring as many as you can. Also, bring a small digging tool, and we will need some shovels to plant some of the coleus.

The Founders Garden needs to be checked for weeds before the 72 red begonias are planted.

Bottled water and treats will be available.

This will be a fun project to do together and it looks like the weather will be beautiful. Thanks, in advance, for your help this coming Saturday. Remember, “Many hands make light work!” Can’t wait to see you there!

GARDEN TOURS
SUNDAY JUNE 9, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

There’s no particular order here, so just be sure to see both of these fabulous gardens.

Tony and Melissa Gossard are at 5122 S. Red Oak Dr., Battlefield, Mo. 65619. They welcome you to see their beautiful hostas in their shaded area. Included in their large sunny area are lilies, blooming coneflowers and a variety of other perennials that make a very colorful garden. You will see many plants in pots as well as a veggie garden. They have a beautiful private view to enjoy from their covered deck. As you stroll through the garden you can enjoy refreshments that will be available.

Shirley Hall’s garden is at 2901 S. Scotts Lane, Springfield, MO 65807. Shirley has planted her garden to best show off several unique iron structures. Her collection of hostas is beautifully planted among a variety of colorful companion plants. Her sun/shade garden is one you will want to take your time to stroll through so you don’t miss anything. Shirley will also have refreshments for you to enjoy.

HOSTA GARDEN NEW FENCE DEDICATION
 (DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED)

Tentative plans to also have a picnic in the Hosta Garden along with the Dedication.

 GARDEN TOURS
 SUNDAY JULY 14, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Todd & Wendy Kuehnel have 2 ponds with Koi you can view from the beautiful wood walkway Todd built. Their large mature shade garden is filled with Hostas, additional shade perennials, many ornamental trees as well as native trees. You will enjoy getting ideas from this beautiful garden.
Ray Woody has a unique yard with the largest selection of all sizes of conifer trees he has planted. You’ll be amazed how large some are and how small for others. Ray has several hundred beautiful peonies we saw blooming last year. The large wandering yard also has Hostas, clematis, shrubs and so much more.

DIG & DIVIDE HOSTAS in the HOSTA GARDEN
SUNDAY AUGUST 25, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

We need to thin some hostas again. So we’ll dig, divide and replant some in the garden. They will be a different variety than what we dug last year and there will be plenty of extras for you to buy very reasonably to add to your garden.

SPEAKER & ICE CREAM SOCIAL
SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 15, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Tom Lakowske will share his knowledge on growing Hostas and the wisdom of planting hostas together that are in the same family. Tom will also share his success in his many potted hostas. This is a good time to share your favorite home-made ice cream with others or if you would prefer, bring a favorite treat to go with ice cream.

MONTH OF OCTOBER

With our many walnut trees in the Hosta garden the walnuts get quite messy if they aren’t picked up. You are welcome (and encouraged) to pick them up in the Hosta & Founders Gardens and surrounding area. Fortunately there is a market to sell them. Please be careful and don’t damage any plants.

FALL CLEAN UP IN HOSTA & FOUNDERS GARDEN
TO BE ANNOUNCED NOVEMBER OR DECEMBER

CHRISTMAS PARTY
SUNDAY DECEMBER 8, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

When Santa left last year he said he would be returning in 2024. He also said he would need help with $10 – $20 gifts. Since Santa loves games he will probably surprise us with some. Treats and refreshments will be available and you are welcome to bring your favorite treat.
